RENOVATING A HEALTH CENTRE SYRIA
By : Nimat Uddin, on June 23, 2026
Rebuilding healthcare for students in Syria
After a decade of conflict, the Syrian healthcare system has been decimated, with 63% of primary care centres closed (March 2025 – WHO). Renovating and reopening clinics and hospitals will be an important job as the country starts to rebuild its future.
Responding to local need in Syria
Baba Amr is a district in Homs. Its population almost entirely evacuated during an intensive 3-week bombardment in the civil war. Large parts of the neighbourhood were destroyed or heavily damaged, including homes, health centres, and the Baba Amr stadium. This once-bustling community had become a scene of devastation, with many thousands of people unable to return home.
After the war, groups including the UN drew up plans to rebuild Baba Amr. In 2025, families were able to travel back to Baba Amr, but the area still lacks the central infrastructure to deliver basics like healthcare.
Our local partners conducted a local needs assessment and found many health centres are still closed. In Baba Amr, they discovered an important primary care centre which was damaged, but had great potential for restoration.
Providing essential healthcare to students and families
875 families have recently returned to live in the local area and the Abu Tammam Al-Tai Clinic could provide important primary care services to them, serving approximately 5,250 people once it is fully operational again.
The work
Salam Charity has funded renovations, from new doors and windows to internal finishing. Our Head of Programmes, Nizar, was on-site when the work was completed and the new Shifa Clinic was preparing to open its doors (watch him here)!
The Abu Tammam Al-Tai Clinic will now be managed by Syria’s Ministry of Health and will provide a safe, dependable service to the families who have returned home.
Support our work in Syria
On deployment, our volunteers will find out how we can best support the people in Syria as they rebuild lives. We’ll be travelling again in December – find more information in the “volunteer abroad” tab.
