WORLD REFUGEE DAY

How You’re Helping Refugees this World Refugee Day

Friday, 20th June is World Refugee Day and we’re honouring the day with a look at how you’ve helped Salam Charity to support refugees around the world.

Sharing food in Lebanon

Did you know that Lebanon has the largest number of refugees per square kilometre? The country hosts almost 2 million people displaced from Syria or Palestine.

The need is great. That’s why we work in Lebanon all year round. But in the winter months, we deliver extra supplies to refugees living under canvas.

In January 2025 we distributed 280 winter blankets and 3,110 litres of heating fuel. Our deployment teams met lots of refugees to find out what else they needed – and provided things like mattresses, furniture and heaters. We also gave out 299 food packs, each one filled with enough ingredients to feed a family for a month.

To enable refugees to celebrate Ramadan, we served up community iftars for about 2,000 people (March 2025).

Fun Days – Lebanon and Jordan

Living in a small tent with your parents and siblings must be stressful sometimes. So, while we’re delivering essentials like food and fuel, we also organise activities, games, and haircuts for the kids. Our volunteers play football, give out treats, and serve up a child-friendly lunch – these Fun Days are some of the best on deployments!

In April 2024, we hosted 249 children at a Fun Day in Lebanon, and 96 at a funfair. We also set up a ‘Wishes Room’ where kids received special gifts (agreed in advance with their guardians!) such as bicycles or clothes.

In Jordan, we ran fun days as part of our deployment trips in February and May.

A fresh start – refugees returning home

You might have seen it in the news: in recent months, many evacuated Syrians have finally felt safe to return home. In June, we were delighted to help many families pack up, travel across the border, and begin renovating their homes and communities.

Thanks to your support, we hired local plumbers, carpenters, electricians, painters and plasterers to repair houses which were fixable. For others – whose homes had been destroyed – we erected durable, insulated tents as temporary shelter.

We’ve been rebuilding homes in Syria for internally displaced people for a couple of years, and Salam Charity will continue to help families to rebuild their lives there.

Refugees are people like you

Refugees are people who have been displaced by conflict or disaster. They’ve often had to leave secure jobs and homes to seek shelter and safety.

Living in crowded refugee camps with limited facilities, their children have difficulty attending school, and access to food can be uncertain. Safe drinking water isn’t always available and without proper sanitation, disease is widespread.

We work in refugee communities to bring essential supplies – and our physical presence is important too, as we pray together, eat together, and play with children.

Help us to keep on showing refugees that the world has not forgotten them.
