Birmingham Canal to Castle Walk (21km)
About the Challenge
Imagine setting off at dawn from the heart of Birmingham and, step by step, following the winding towpaths of the Grand Union Canal all the way to the magnificent Warwick Castle. That’s the Birmingham Canal to Castle Trek – a one-day challenge that takes you through some of the most scenic and historic waterways in England, while raising vital funds for communities without access to clean water.
The route begins at Birmingham Cathedral, passes through the city’s famous canal network, and opens into the green heartland of Warwickshire. Along the way, you’ll travel through Solihull, Dorridge, and the iconic Hatton Locks – one of the most spectacular staircase lock systems in the country – before finishing triumphantly at St Nicholas Park in Warwick, with the castle rising ahead.
Choose your distance: take on the full 42km marathon challenge or opt for the 21km half trek. Every step helps Salam Charity provide clean water to rural communities in Ghana, where 59% of people still lack access to safe drinking water.
Where Your Fundraising Goes: Ghana Water Projects
In rural northern Ghana, access to clean water is a daily struggle. Women and girls walk up to 5km each day to collect water from unsafe sources—time that could be spent in education or supporting their families. The water is often contaminated, leading to serious health risks.
Since 2011, Salam Charity has been drilling deep borehole wells in underserved communities. Each well supports over 1,000 people and provides clean water for more than 20 years.
To date, over 200 wells have been built across Ghana, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. A single well costs just £1,400—equivalent to £1.40 per person per year for two decades of safe water. Your trek could help fund an entire well.
